Orangeries are
back in fashion. These traditional buildings are quintessentially European
having
first been designed by the Dutch and then adopted by the British
nobility and landed gentry as a must have for their stately homes.
Please see a detailed account of history
of orangeries
The word orangery as
the name suggests were designed to host exotic plants like orange
trees that were brought
into the UK by British seaman returning from foreign lands. Although
in warmer climates orange trees tended to be planted in the surrounding
gardens.
Today orangeries are back in vogue as an alternative to designer
conservatories and garden
rooms as a stylish way to extend your home. An orangery is distingued
from a conservatory by means of a flat sold roof that plays host
to a decorative mini roof known as a roof lantern. The roof of the
orangery is hidden from view by a decorative cornice that rises above
the flat section. Although orangeries were traditionally built from
brick and stone and increasingly more popular design solution is
to build them from solid oak
Orangeries can be designed to blend with any time of home and the
illustrations shown on this page will give you an idea of the different
styles and options. For more information visit Richmond Oak at www.oakconservatories.co.uk.
Orangeries are now commonly used as a form of kitchen
conservatory, breakfast room or a grand dining room.
